The main research activity of prof. Shacham will be to study the integration of the whole cell biosensors developed at Tel Aviv University with the electronic circuit and systems (CAS) and devices studied at the group of Prof. Danilo Demarchi at the polytechnico di Torino.  The focus will be on flexible sensors using nanoparticles on polymer and their surface functionalization for applications in the fields of agriculture, medicine, and environment. The sensors will be interfaced with local electronics systems and further linked to the cloud via specially designed interfaces.  A special attention will be given to sensors for agriculture – for example for vineyards, detecting dehydration, heat shock, nutrients deficiency, or toxicants or pesticides over or under use. We will investigate whole cell biosensor networks for the environment and agriculture including designing experimental field test setup locally in Torino or nearby. Specifically, we will explore multi-sensor applications, improve data quality, noise reduction, nonlinear filtering, thresholding, find the best filters for whole cell biosensors, Network to cloud interfacing (i.e. power saving, security). During the sabbatical period, Prof. Shacham will also teach graduate students about bio-sensing technologies, their interfacing and the associated electronics circuits, Integration with polymeric MEMS.
