A first goal of the visit is to consolidate the collaboration between Politecnico di Torino and the European Space Agency (ESA) on topics related to gravity missions. Indeed, this collaboration started with the GOCE mission and continued with the new mission concept NGGM (Next Generation Gravity Missions). The second goal of the visit is to carry out a research activity on the following subjects: Remote sensing: observation principles
This research topic is devoted to consolidation of the fundamental observables for scientific Earth observation missions, with a particular emphasis on gravity missions. Investigations on trade-offs and suitability of the design will be done during the visiting period.
Formation flying control applications
The flying missions (ESA and NASA, or DLR missions) do not implement, effectively, an on-board formation flying. Future gravity missions, embarking an inter-satellite ranging via laser link, require a design of the control algorithms which have to take into account the real time position and relative attitude of the companion satellite.
Recurrent technologies for flying equipment
An investigation on flying recurrent technologies and on technologies in qualification phase (from breadboard up to Qualification Models) will be performed for future gravity missions, concerning sensors, actuators and ultra-precise accelerometers.
