Dr. Tessler earned a Ph.D. degree in Structural Engineering and Applied Mechanics from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1979. He started his professional career working as a senior aerospace engineer at Northrop Corporation in Hawthorne, California (1980-83), where he developed analytic and computational methods for linear and nonlinear composite structures in support of advanced fighter aircraft designs. He continued his career working at the U.S. Army Materials Technology Laboratory, Watertown, Massachusetts (1983-91), where as principal Investigator and program manager he formulated, managed, and conducted basic and applied structural integrity programs involving analytic and computational mechanics research. During the period of 1991 – 2017, Dr. Tessler worked as a senior research scientist at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. He led the development of advanced computational methods for aerospace structural analysis and design. Formulated, conducted and directed the development of innovative practical methods which reduce design cycle time and enable comprehensive early design trade-off studies to dramatically decrease costs through informed early design decisions. From May 2017 until present, as a distinguished research associate at NASA, Dr. Tessler formulated advanced analysis methods for multilayered and sandwich composite structures and inverse finite element methods for structural health management. Throughout his career as an aerospace engineer and U.S. government researcher, Dr. Tessler also had numerous academic positions serving as adjunct professor at Northeastern University in Boston, MA (1986-91), Old Dominion University (1992-97) in Norfolk, VA, George Washington University (1992-present), and University of Virginia (2001), where he taught graduate courses in Mechanical Vibrations, Advanced Mechanics of Materials, Elastic Stability, Advanced Dynamics, and Plates and Shells. He also directed research of twelve M.S. and PhD students toward degree completion.
Dr. Tessler is credited with development of analytic and finite element methods used in commercial software (e.g., AUTODESK, Element LMT3: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/moldflow-insight/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2018/ENU/MoldflowInsight/files/GUID-C6040A5F-6941-450C-B147-FBC16693CC13-htm.html ).
He was responsible for incorporating advanced computational methods into NASA’s STAGS and COMET-AR finite element codes utilized by Boeing, Northrop-Grumman, and Lockheed-Martin.
He served as consultant to MSFC for Space Station Node anomaly and evaluation of US Lab module.
He served as NASA’s structures expert for Superlight Weight External Tank (Space Shuttle) and NASA/Russian Joint Working Group on Subsonic Aeronautics Technologies.
He chaired MIL-Handbook-17 Thick Section Composites Committee (industry design guide).
Dr. Tessler received numerous U.S. Army and NASA Awards. In 2004 Dr. Tessler became the NASA Floyd Thompson Fellow. His biography is published in Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering; Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World. He is ranked in the top 10% of all researchers on ResearchGate.net (RG score 32.38, h-index 28).
