Prof. Vaillant Roca will work on the project Functional nanostructures for solar energy conversion to develop proof of concept devices based on sustainable nanostructured components. The aim is to bridge the gap between fundamental investigations in energy conversion and photovoltaic applications. In particular low cost, solution-processable semiconductors have enormous potential for creating large scale, flexible photovoltaic technologies. The targeted materials are metal oxides, e.g. Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide which are stable, readily available, nonhazardous materials with interesting optical and electrical properties.

Additionally, they can be easily synthesized from solution to form a versatile family of nanostructures and thin films. These metal oxides do not absorb light over the entire visible spectrum and they can be interfaced with high performance absorber materials to create systems with enhanced photovoltaic activity.
