Franck Delaunay will participate in the activities of the Politecnico within the NUMEN project, aiming at measuring the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) involved in neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), a process possible if neutrinos and antineutrinos are identical (Majorana neutrinos). As such, 0νββ is ideally suited to investigate the neutrino nature. However, extracting new physics parameters from 0νββ rates requires the knowledge of the 0νββ NMEs (transition amplitudes connecting initial and final states). NUMEN plans to measure these NMEs by double charge exchange reactions (DCE) at the LNS Catania (Italy), using the MAGNEX large-acceptance spectrometer.
Identifying the DCE channels requires an energy resolution of 500 keV. This resolution is limited by target thickness inhomogeneities, which should be kept small by an appropriate target manufacturing process.
In addition to participating in the general activities of NUMEN (experiments, data analysis), Franck Delaunay will be involved in the development of uniform targets, in particular:
- Implement a system to measure target thicknesses and inhomogeneities.
- Adapt the target manufacturing process to each element of interest.
- Implement a setup to measure the heat dissipation in the target and test the cooling system.
- Characterise the target behaviour under realistic irradiation with high-intensity heavy-ion beams.
