Katul’s project at Politechnic of Turin focuses on the physical mechanisms describing air-water gas transfer needed to quantify global CO2 emissions from inland water such as lakes, reservoirs, and streams.  The uncertainty in these emissions remains at first-order despite their global and regional importance.  The research question addressed focuses on how turbulent transport processes in inland waters impact CO2 and other trace gas fluxes as well as their gas transport velocity. Two types of inland waters are distinguished in this analysis: stationary (as in lakes and reservoirs) and moving (as in streams).  The distinction is necessary because stationary conditions imply wind generation of turbulence is co-located with the water interface exchanging CO2 with the atmosphere, whereas in streams, maximum turbulent stresses are near the stream bed and are furthest from the air-water interface. The approach combines laboratory experiments to be conducted at DIATI with novel theories and published data to arrive at universal expressions for gas transfer velocities applicable to all slightly and sparingly soluble gases.  It is envisaged that those theories will be incorporated into the next generation of community land models.  Katul will offer a number of public lectures open to all PhD and Masters Students interested in this topic.
