COMPLETE - Cloud-MicroPhysics-Turbulence-Telemetry: An inter-multidisciplinary training network for enhancing the understanding and modeling of atmospheric clouds

Understanding cloud behaviour is fundamental for weather prediction and climate modelling which justifies the need for more explorative observations. The COMPLETE project will contribute to closing the knowledge gap and will allow young researchers to develop their scientific competences specific to this research field as well as key professional skills applicable to both the academic and industrial environments.
Description of the research project
Clouds are the largest source of uncertainty in weather prediction and climate modelling. This is rooted in the fact that clouds depend on physical and chemical processes over a huge range of scales, from the nucleation of droplet at the nanoscales, to the collisions of micron-sized droplets, to airflow dynamics on the scales of thousands of meters.
The mathematical treatment of multi-scale phenomena is very complex. Any improvement rests on the availability of precise experimental data sets.
The research objective of COMPLETE is to establish connections between events occurring on various scales. Additionally, the project aims to develop an international and multidisciplinary training network that will prepare researchers with both scientific and industrially-oriented skills to advance our understanding in these multi-scale complex natural phenomena. The training programme will combine the scientific investigation of specific aspects of cloud physics and related turbulent dynamics with training in key professional skills. This includes an exceptional experimental programme with in-field and laboratory experiments, numerical simulations, the design and development of advanced fast temperature probes, velocity micro-electronic and mechanical devices and innovative atmospheric mini green expandable radio-probes; all aimed at the production of new datasets required to reduce the fragmentation of results and knowledge in this field.
Impact on researcher’s career and on society
Early Stage Researchers recruited during the project will receive a training allowing them to develop many professional competences useful to work both in academic research and in industry, to design and produce technologically innovative monitoring systems or to evaluate environmental risks.
Concerning the advancement of research, COMPLETE creates a large network of research groups at the international level, allowing cross-fertilization among different research communities (e.g. fundamental and applied physics, climate modelling, complex systems, fluid dynamics, telecommunication, sensor engineering), for the benefit of European Industry and the European Research Area.
