The project aims to realize a digital assistant tool to perform a structural analysis through embedded Artificial Intelligence - AI. By studying the human perception and intuition from a neuro-cognitive view, we propose to realize an integrated computational machine with human baggage.

Description of the research project 

The project is articulated into four phases:

  • Classificate and codificate simple structural systems, methods and analyses to build a specific AI;
  • Use the database as a field guide to perform cognitive and neurofunctional tests on human individuals with different ages, occupations and interests;
  • Update the database with the extracted human information and train an integrated AI.
  • Test and validation of the realized FORSEES tool.

Apart from the significant novelty of the scientific research about neuro-cognitive perception of mechanical systems, the project has predictive and didactic purposes. A real-time visualization of the indirect investigation of the structural behavior could stimulate a faster learning process and new ideas and concepts beyond the classical mechanical approach, especially on extreme cases. Computer sciences research phases will be hosted by Senseable City Lab in MIT, while BioRobotics Institute of Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies will conduct the neuro functional analyses. All the structural related topics of FORSEES (validations, tests and applications) will be investigated at the DISEG - Department of Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering of Politecnico di Torino.

Impact on fellow career and on society 

Bill Gates declared the realization of the embedded AI as one of the 9 challenges of modern mankind, while the Future of Life Institute declared mandatory the conjugation of human and mechanical brain for computational purposes. Growing urbanization requires more and more diagnostic and scalable methods for risk analyses. The research fellow will then acquire expertise in strategic fields for the global and European community. Moreover, he will take advantage of working in a cutting-edge scientific environment. He will attend classes at the MIT Brain Institute and he will learn from a two years stay at MIT SCL.

Short CV of Marie Curie fellow 

Fabio Bazzucchi is a post-doc researcher at DISEG department of Politecnico di Torino. He holds a PhD in Structural Engineering and a Civil Engineering MSc. He has been Visiting Scholar at MIT and he has been recently awarded with the Ermenegildo Zegna Founders Scholarship and the Leonardo Innovation Prize.
